Fat Cat
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (June, 1987)
Author: Jack Kent
Average review score:

This wonderful story should be brought back for kids today
This story is incredibly funny, both in its droll pictures and the increasingly long, counting-style list of what the Fat Cat has eaten. All of us in my family who grew up with Kent's Fat Cat could recite lines from the book, it was such a favorite. It truly is a shame that this wonderful, comic tale is out of print -- it's the kind of timeless children's book that appeals to children of ALL ages, and it's as fun to read aloud to children as it is for the kids to hear.

My favorite children's folktale!
My Dad still talks and teases me about this (somewhat morbid, but funny) story of a very hungry kitty cat. It ranks as the the most requested bedtime story of my childhood. I would very much love to see this book back in print so that I may read it to my children.

This is my very favorite childhood book.
I have been looking for this book for several years with no luck. I have a one year old daughter and I want to be able to share this book with her but I cannot find the copy I had as a child. I wish they would put it back in print!

Read Aloud Bible Stories: Vol. 3
Published in Hardcover by Moody Press (August, 1990)
Authors: Ella K. Lindvall and H. Kent Puckett
Average review score:

Terrific for Ages 3-8
This "Read Aloud" series is by far the most enjoyable children's bible stories we have found. The illustrations are wonderful and the story selection in each volume is varied and interesting, but not overwhelming. Because of the writing style, the stories are very captivating for little children to hear. The use of pattern and repetion brings the action to life and the word choices are within their range. A friend told me it has been a fabulous resource for her sunday school class. Best of all, when my son began to read, these books proved to be the best and most interesting early readers for him because that same pattern, repetetion and word choice that was great for young listeners is perfect for young readers. My son now reads to his siblings and they all love it!

Excellent Resource
Ms. Lindvall does an excellent job of relaying classic Bible stories in a manner that is poignant, yet developmentally appropriate for young minds. It is evident that she has taken the utmost care and reverence in adapting the text. The beautiful illustrations by H. Kent Puckett accompany the stories in a captivating, powerful way. There are few enough words per page, and the illustrations are so well done, that the combination makes this series an excellent resource for sharing the Bible with children, and maintaining their attention long enough to deliver the Message. Each book includes 5 Bible Stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Stories include those such as that of Creation, Joseph and His Coat, Jesus Stills the Storm, and Noah and the Ark.

Not Your Traditional Children's Bible Story Book!
This series is by far the best of the best. The stories and illustrations are fabulous!

Children often find the illustrations in other Bible story books scary or weird. While the illustrations are true to the times in terms of dress, they are exaggerated in size, yet simple. For example, Zaccheus, "who was to little to reach high things..." is shown as a small man in HUGE chair. (p. 6-7)

The text is delightful! For example in "The Boys and Girls and Jesus," the children come to see Jesus as part of families, i.e. "Every day lots of daddies and mommies came to hear Jesus talk. Grandpas and grandmas and friends came, too. Some days - there were too many people to get inside a house. Then, the daddies and the mommies and the grandpas and the grandmas and the friends stood right out in the sunshine..." (p.71-74)

Great for older children to read to younger children. The best part is adults will enjoy this book too!

Simple Truths: Clear & Gentle Guidance on the Big Issues in Life
Published in Hardcover by New World Library (June, 1996)
Author: Kent Nerburn
Average review score:

This book is a GIFT
I mean that both figuratively and literally. I received it as a gift....and a gift it has been indeed to my consciousness. Ken Nerburn must be a very special, wise, and enlightened soul to express himself the way he does. How fortunate his family has been to have him....how lucky we are that he has shared his incredible perceptions and profoundly wise words with us.

Finally a book designed to help me, that did.
I was given Simple Truths as a gift. After my second reading of it, I began buying the copies from any bookstore I found that had a few copies. I must've given away 20 or more copies. There is a message for us all inside these very simple pages. Thank you, Dr. Nerburn, you changed me when I needed it most, by pointing out things I believe I've always known. I have survived the worst trauma of my life with this clear and gentle guidance.

More wisdom than in any small book I've ever read
This book is so profound I can't describe it. I don't know how anyone could distill so much that was so important into such a small work. Love, death, parenting, drugs, nature, solitude, work. And everything is so wisely expressed. Give this book to every young person you know. No, give it to everyone you know! I defy you to read this and not be enlightened in some way you never imagined.

The Adventures of Sunny & The Chocolate Dog: Sunny Meets Her Baby Sister
Published in Paperback by Sunny & The Chocolate Dog, LLC (15 February, 2003)
Authors: Susie Neimark and Kent Hammerstrom
Average review score:

It takes time for the two canines to get to know one another
Sunny Meets Her Baby Sister is a picture book in Susie Neimark's "Sunny & the Chocolate Dog" series. Sunny is a frisky yellow Labrador who has to adjust to the antics of a playful puppy that her loving parents choose to be her new sibling. It takes time for the two canines to get to know one another, yet the rewards of forging a relationship are beyond measure in this charming story which is enhanced with Kent Hammerstrom's cheerful illustrations. Also very highly recommended is the Neimark and Hammerstrom companion title: Sunny & The Chocolate Dog Go To The Beach...

The Adventures of Sunny & The Chocolate Dog: Sunny Meets Her
I thought the book was excellent. I can see how this book can be used to educate children on dogs or any animal in the house and also provide a lesson to the reader to pass to a child. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will now read the others. I highly recommend it.

Full of Love and Understanding
I am so impressed with the care and understanding that the author put into this book. Just about everyone I know can relate to the subject matter (especially the part pertaining to sharing). I am always looking for books for my grandchildren and I couldn't have made a better selection. The large print is a plus and encourages an older sibling to read to their younger brother or sister.

The 911 Handbook: Biblical Solutions to Everyday Problems
Published in Hardcover by Hendrickson Publishers, Inc. (01 July, 1997)
Author: Kent Crockett
Average review score:

Give as a gift to those who struggle in their faith.
A friend of mine gave this book to her son who could not seem to even get interested in reading the Bible. He had made several attempts to grow in his faith before. She gave him this book. Once he started to read the 911 Hnadbook, he could not put it down. He found real practical answers to his problems. He began to grow for the first time in his spiritual life. He died tragically shortly after he read this book. At the funeral service his mother gave the Lord through this book credit for saving her son !!!! Give it as a gift to those who struggle with their faith.

A real asset to any library
Pastor Kent has written an outstanding book which is a real asset to any library, large or small.I am a United Methodist pastor in the Kansas City, Missouri area. I have repeatedly recommended this book to people in all walks of life. The book has great commonsense insight with a strong spiritual foundation. This is a practical, easy read, which makes effective use of stories and illustrations! Get it-you won't be sorry

Real Solutions- Not Psycho-Babble
Over the last ten years I have read many books relating to self-help and religion. Most of these have offered useful insights, such as Scott Peck's The Road Less Traveled. Others such as The Lies We Believe by Chris Thurman have been enlightening and helpful. However, Kent Crockett's book cuts to the chase to give the reader immediate access to the scriptures which identify our problems and present Biblically sound solutions. Pastor Crockett has a fresh and genuine outlook and style which is non-judgmental and comforting. His words deliver unpretentious wisdom and a message that God is alive and available to help us in today's world.

Making Today Count for Eternity
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (30 June, 2001)
Author: Kent Crockett
Average review score:

Very inspiring
I'm not 100% convinced of his theological principle: 'today's life being directly equal to our eternal life in heaven', BUT it's very encouraging, has a wonderful message and offers great hope to those who are presently discouraged or unsure of why we're here on earth, and why it's so painful at times.

Excellent Book!!!
I strongly recommend this book. He describes how one can put a smile on God's face by everyday actions. He addresses the assumption that people have that they must done something "big" to be significant by countering it with his premise that the small actions in life are actually the important things. The Scripture reference for his point is Colossians 3:23-24, "Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve." He writes that life on earth determines responsibilities in heaven and "the most important thing you can do is whatever God wants you to do at that moment" (p. 165).
This book motivates a person to be diligent in every task, realizing that nothing is insignificant.

I HIGHLY recommend this beautiful book!
What a blessing from the Lord this book is! :) This book is so needed in our day. It's very encouraging and uplifting, and scripturally helps you to realize just how important our purpose and short time on earth are. God made each of us unique & special for a reason...and this life is our "opportunity for Christ", with many heavenly rewards. This book beautifully shows that whatever your position in life is...whether a homemaker or an engineer, etc..God will use you right where you are & with how He made you the way He did. :) Enjoy! I know you will! :)

There's No Such Thing As a Dragon
Published in Hardcover by Goldencraft (December, 1975)
Author: Jack Kent
Average review score:

Really cute book
I loved this book when I was a kid, and just bought it for the baby we're about to have. It's about a dragon that lives with with a boy but keeps growing to get attention (no one believes he exists).

Acknowlege the dragon
This is a book my daughter loved. But there's a message for adults in this little story as well. Acknowlege the dragon(s) in your life, and they will become managable. Ignore (deny) them, and they will become as big as a house.

Terrific book for all ages!
My search for a replacement copy of There's No Such Thing As A Dragon continues... not only was it a favourite of my children when they wre young, but also so meaningful to the teens in my behavioural classes that someone took my only copy! It is excellent for introducing a myriad of issues that such teens deal with - abuse, drugs, alcohol etc.

Disciplines of a Godly Man
Published in Hardcover by Crossway Books (September, 2001)
Author: R. Kent Hughes
Average review score:

Discipleship any one?
One of the frustrations in my life is that I have been a christian for 1/2 of my 43 years and you would think that I would be farther along on my journey to become a disciple. Mr. Hughes, the author of this book, shares his thoughts on becoming a man of God, and some areas that we need to focus in on. In chapters like, "The Discipline of Marriage", he points out ways that men stumble and encourages us to avoid the pitfalls that have tripped so many up. This book takes a hard line on sin, but doesn't preach. It encourages us to be strong and courageous and gives practical steps for keeping the victory over sin. It is an excellent book to use in a men's discussion group. You can read a chapter each week, read the scriptures which are referenced and discuss the end of chapter questions. I recommend this to every man, 15 and up.

Superb Primer on Spirituality for Men!
It is easy to see why Kent Hughes' book has been such a best seller. The author has compiled in these pages an invaluable collection of helpful, spiritual advice for men in the 21st century. I am not aware of a more comprehensive volume that covers so many topics within one cover.

Hughes identifies the following life areas: relationships, soul, character, ministry, and grace. He then provides specific disciplines that each cultivate a more dynamic Christian lifestyle. His advice is Biblically sound, culturally relevant, and easy to understand.

This book will be very helpful to any man who desires to grow deeper in his devotion to Jesus Christ. While it is only an introductory work, it provides a solid foundation on which to begin a more structured approach to discipleship. I recommend it highly.

A Classic for God-Fearing Men
R. Kent Hughes hits the nail on the head. The world in general and the church in particular is suffering from a lack of godly leadership. When pastors and longtime church leaders are falling into sin on a daily basis, Christians need a wake-up call to spiritual living. And it's the men who must take the lead.

This book is ten years old, but it has never been more relevant. Mixing biblical exposition with practical application, Hughes gives men a prescription for righteous living.

As hard as it is to take, this veteran pastor speaks to men on their terms. Carefully organized, The Disciplines of a Godly Man, goes through each phase of a man's life. It delivers Scriptural guidelines on issues like lust, pride, responsibility, and marriage.

Keep this book on your nightstand. Its a must-have for Christian leaders, including preachers, educators, and laymen. Men, take The Disciplines of a Godly Man and lead in the way God has called you to lead.

To Glory We Steer
Published in Hardcover by Buccaneer Books (June, 1993)
Author: Alexander Kent
Average review score:

4 blistering broadsides beckon Bolitho beginner
Alexander Kent was second after Dudley Pope to launch a naval series that followed in the wake of C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. Like Forester, Kent set the first novel when his hero had achieved captaincy and then filled in on both sides. From the beginning Kent established his Richard Bolitho as a stalwart hero in the mould of Hornblower or Pope's Ramage. Kent's novels would be defined by brutal realistic naval battles, action and the spirit of high adventure.

To Glory We Steer is set in the waning months of the American Revolution. Yorktown has been lost and the French under Admiral DeGrasse are looking to extend the victory and drive the British out of the Caribbean. Bolitho is sent to the Caribbean in command of a ship in which a mutiny was put down. The officers and men are all questionable. Can Richard Bolitho assume command, obtain the loyalty of his men and administer a caning to the French? Of course he can but the fun is in watching him do it.

The Bolitho novels are cast in the post-romantic mode. Kent excels at action as his titles imply. However, the author knows what real war is like and doesn't flinch in describing the effects of cutlasses and grapeshot on human flesh. Given that the novel was first published during the height of the Vietnam War, it's hard to imagine that Kent could have written To Glory We Steer any other way.

Kent keeps sex out of To Glory We Steer following MacLean's dictum that it interfers with the action. In fact, there are no women at all in the book. One sailor's wife has significance to the plot but she doesn't enter the action. To Glory We Steer is a manly book about manly men doing manly things.

To Glory We Steer is not as polished as the novels that followed and in my view suffers from one climax too many. The Battle of the Saintes should be the climax of the novel and it loses some of its punch because of earlier action. Also, there are some opportunities missed because Kent wrote the series out of chronological order. For instance, he meets another officer named Dancer. Having read Richard Bolitho-Midshipman and Richard Bolitho and the 'Avenger', my first thought was that Bolitho would say, "I served with a Martyn Dancer..." or something to that effect. However, there is no mention of the earlier Dancer. These are minor foibles.

It's a little rough around the edges but it's still a great start to great series. Kent novels make an excellent guilty pleasure.

Another outstanding seafaring adventure
Mr Kent delivers another classic account of Richard Bolitho and his adventures. A well written and detailed tale of sea battles, workings of the British ship at war, the customs, the dangers. The characters are great and the plot is superb. I recommend all of Kent's Bolitho series, you won't be disappointed.

On the Uproll, Fire!
I have read the Alexander Kent bolitho series since I was in college. I personally think them superior to the Hornblower series, and they undoubtedly are the best of the genre. Exciting, accurate, well-written, and full of adventure against enemy and sea, they give a superb picture of life and warfare at sea in the age of sail.

This volume is my favorite. Kent knows his business regarding both seamanship and ships, and leadership, both routine and in combat. He has created a world that encompassess heroes and villains, veterans and neophytes, graceful frigates and ponderous ships of the line, and the darting sloops and brigs that did most of the dirty work.

The characters are unforgettable, from Richard Bolitho, Thomas Herrick who becomes his friend and loyal 1st Lieutenant, to Captain Rennie of the ship's marine detachment. And of course, there is John Allday, veteran seaman, pressed man, and who becomes perhaps Bolitho's closestThe ship herself is a main character, and no one who ever reads this book will forget the frigate HMS Phalarope. To those who 'go down to the sea in ships' the vessels themselves are alive, which undoubtedly they are, and this frigate is unforgettable, gallant, and as enduring as her crew.

This novel is superb, a tale of high deeds, mutiny, loyalty, friendship, and the horror of combat. Read in conjunction with Robert Gardiner's factual, well illustrated books on the age of sail, they are an unbeatable combination.

The Christian Wedding Planner
Published in Plastic Comb by Tyndale House Publishers (July, 1991)
Authors: Ruth Muzzy, R. Kent Hughes, and Kent Hughes
Average review score:

Dated & Lacking
This book SEEMED like it would be helpful, but except for *some* info on premarital counseling, it really came very close to being like any other *secular* wedding book. Some of the advice is really dated, too.

Absolutely loved this planner!
I used this planner for my wedding in 1998. It never left my side, I took it everywhere! It helps you plan everything from the day you get engaged to the honeymoon...

If you're a listmaker and love checklists, this is the planner for you! There are tons of lists, calendars, and how-to's for the entire process. Four years later, it's still on my bookshelf for easy access. It's a fabulous planner that I'd recommend to anyone!

A must-have wedding planner!
I used this book 3 years ago when I was married and recently passed it along to my sister-in-law to be. It is an invaluable resource and a very **different** resource. It isn't a book about different wedding "ideas" ("how to arrange the tablecloths", "how to deal with new in-laws", etc.) It is a **GO-TO** resource on the actual planning of the ceremony/celebration. It gives template sheets that I found helpful to simply xerox and put in a 3-ring binder and create my own workbook. (The best part is the book is still blank for my sister-in-law now!) Your money will be well spent here.
